Activity report from week of October 4 – 10

Variety of meetings

Last week was a typically busy, middle of the semester week, with meetings devoted to

  • Discussions of dual credit;
  • Accommodating 300 students from Mexico for English language training, as well as training in technological innovation and commercialization;
  • An NSF LTER site review;
  • STEM support and outreach efforts.

Legislative Finance Committee Auditors

I spent a particularly large block of time with Drs. Jon Courtney and Travis McIntyre of the Legislative Finance Committee.  They are in the process of auditing the state’s universities with a special focus on the retention efforts of institutions of higher education.  They noted that NMSU is already the most successful university in the state with regard to meeting retention and graduation expectations.  Nevertheless, the state expects even more of NMSU, a position with which I agree.  After a full day of presentations from offices and individuals that are engaged with innovative and successful retention efforts, I believe Dr. Courtney and Dr. McIntyre were impressed with our commitment to student success and our efforts to improve graduation rates.  Thanks to everyone who met with Dr. Courtney and Dr. McIntyre.  Your presentations were excellent.
