China Agricultural University
I spent most of the week in Beijing, China visiting the China Agricultural University for the launch of the NMSU-CAU Water Science and Engineering Joint Research Center and the celebration of the 110th anniversary of the founding of CAU. The NMSU delegation also included Dr. Sam Fernald, Dr. Pei Xu, and Dr. Jinfa Zhang. Our discussions focused on two major topics—joint research programs and dual degree programs. The potential for joint research projects between our two universities is already being realized. While in Beijing, Dr. Fernald and Dr. Xu worked with colleagues at CAU to put the finishing touches on a one million dollar grant proposal to the U.S-China Joint Research Projects in Environmental Sustainability Program. The first dual degree program will be a Ph.D. program in the Area of Water Resource and Civil Engineering. Already, one graduate student from CAU is in Las Cruces working with Dr. Fernald, demonstrating the potential that dual degree programs have for providing unique educational opportunities, as well as for encouraging collaboration between institutions and the development of joint research projects.
