Activity Report for Week of September 3 – September 9

  • The Chancellor and I welcomed new faculty members to NMSU at a reception at the University Residence on Wednesday evening. A torrential downpour did not dampen the spirit of this group, who come to us from across the country with strong commitments to their scholarship and teaching.  It was a pleasure to learn more about each of them and to spend some time providing our perspective on the NMSU experience.
  • On Friday, NMSU hosted the agriculture secretary of Mexico and NMSU alum, Jose Calzada, as well as the President of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, Peter McPherson. The talks with Calzada centered on areas of potential collaboration between Mexico and NMSU.  Five areas were identified:
    • Water and irrigation
    • Organic food production
    • Cattle (meat, milk, and genetics)
    • Climate change
    • Extension
  • Afternoon discussions with Peter McPherson centered on NMSU’s effort to train Mexican universities in the area of extension, research challenges that must be met by NMSU, and the APLU initiative on ensuring global food security by 2050. The latter initiative is one in which I would like to see greater involvement by NMSU, and I will work with Dean Flores to see that NMSU has a place at the table.
