On Tuesday of last week, the College Deans of NMSU Las Cruces and I spent all day together discussing the signature strengths and programs of NMSU Las Cruces and how to work together to further develop these strengths. It was a good meeting characterized by a strong spirit of cooperation and community, and focusing on possibilities and opportunities.
By the end of the day, we had identified the following areas, where we currently have a presence, as ripe for further investment and growth:
- Data Analytics (Big Data in a variety of areas)
- Sustainable Agriculture
- Emerging Infectious Diseases
- STEM Education
- Health Disparities
- Water Resources and Research
- Information Literacy
- Economic Development and Entrepreneurship
- Critical Infrastructure
In the coming months, the Deans will bring groups of faculty together from across the university to discuss research and teaching opportunities in these areas and how to cultivate collaborations across departments and colleges. The goal will be to strengthen existing programs while identifying collaborations that will encourage new growth into areas attractive to funding agencies and to students. I encourage you to let your Dean, and my office (firstname.lastname@example.org), know of your interest in being part of one of these groups.
The eleven areas identified above do not cover the wide range of interests of faculty and students on the Las Cruces campus and their listing is not intended to discourage the good work being done in other fields. However, attention paid to areas where we are currently well positioned for interdisciplinary research and teaching excellence has the promise of promoting growth that benefits everyone associated with NMSU.
With all best wishes,
