Team 6

provost-dan-howardThe Transforming NMSU Process, a re-structuring of our administrative units and processes designed to improve efficiency and reduce costs, has been underway for more than a year. Some of the most important work done during the course of this process has emanated from Team 1, which has concentrated on administrative units outside the colleges and worked with these units to reduce levels of management and improve spans of control.  The goal has been to improve efficiency and reduce costs, better positioning the university to sustain itself during these resource limited times and, in the long term, freeing funds to better compensate our staff and faculty, and to invest in our teaching, research, and service mission.
The work of Team 1 is now coming to a close and a new Team, 6, has been organized to work with the colleges on their organizational structures and processes.  The majority of this team, members of which are listed here, are faculty members and every college is represented on the team.  The faculty members were nominated to the team by college deans and the final selection of members was made by a group composed of past and present leaders of the Faculty Senate, the Chancellor, and me.  I am grateful to the members of Team 6 for their willingness to serve.
Similar to Team 1, the approach of Team 6 will be to work with the leadership of each college to examine, evaluate, and when appropriate transform the administrative policies, as well as the composition and organizational structure of the college. In addition to supporting the resource stewardship goal of Vision 2020, ideally the efforts of Team 6 will result in an NMSU that is better situated to provide stellar academic programs and services for our students, and is better able to respond to transformational opportunities for collaborative and multidisciplinary research across all colleges.
NMSU, like most universities in the United States, enjoyed a steady increase in students and state funding for many years, allowing for growth through a tinkering, bolt-on process without the imperative for stepping back and assessing our overall organizational structures and processes.  The current budget realities require that we now carefully assess these structures and processes with a willingness to make changes that reduce administrative costs while preserving and strengthening our research, teaching, and service mission as New Mexico’s land-grant university.
