Activity Report for Week of February 18 – February 24

  • On Monday, I had the honor of welcoming National Merit Finalists and National Hispanic Scholars (and their families) to NMSU. Dean Miriam Chaiken and the Honors College brought the students to campus as part of our Conroy Scholars recruiting effort.  This is the third recruitment class and the size of the cohort grows every year.  I am grateful to Dr. Chaiken for her efforts to build this program and to the deans and department heads of our academic departments for their support of the recruitment effort.  The beauty of our campus and the clear commitment of our faculty to student success comes across clearly in a campus visit and often seals the deal in attracting highly recruited students to NMSU.
  • At the Centralized Advising Taskforce meeting on Wednesday, I turned over Chair duties to Jennifer Hodges, who is the Interim Director of the Center for Academic Advising and Student Support. She will be joined in her administrative duties by Marissa Fowler who will be the Associate Director of the Center.  At the Taskforce meeting we discussed space for the Center, processes and procedures that would be performed by the advising staff of the Center, and the personnel who would actually be associated with the Center.
  • At the Regents Financial, Strategic Performance and Budget Committee, we discussed sources and uses for the 2018 Budget Committee. Discussion centered on enrollment projections for the coming year and proposed new spending.  Later in the day, I attended a joint meeting of this committee and the Regents Student Success Committee.  Discussion at this meeting focused on new spending to support student success.  There is considerable overlap between the spending recommendations of the Regents Student Success Committee and the spending recommendations of the university administration.  Our challenge in the coming month will be to merge the spending proposals into a single plan that is consistent with efficient use of resources and the budget realities of NMSU.
