Activity Report for Week of March 25 – March 31

  • On Monday, I met with the search committee for the Vice President for Research. In giving the charge to the committee, I emphasized the importance of hiring someone with the credentials necessary to have credibility with our faculty; experience in dealing with funding agencies; and a vision for how to help NMSU grow its research enterprise during this era of low success rates for grant proposals. Some of the subsequent discussion focused on the role of the Vice President for Research in the university and whether the position really added value to the university. I encouraged the committee to carefully consider the role of the Vice President for Research in the university and provide a job description that laid out responsibilities that would make the position more meaningful.
  • On Thursday, I attended a meeting of the Strategic Enrollment Management Council. It was a productive meeting during which we discussed long-term enrollment trends, as well as long-term variation in the size of the faculty at NMSU. Going forward the Committee will identify enrollment targets to be achieved both annually and over the next five years.  The committee will also discuss and recommend marketing budgets and recruiting strategies, as well as tuition and scholarship policies and retention practices that might be implemented at NMSU.
  • On Friday, I attended a meeting of the Regents Financial, Strategies, Performance, and Budget Committee. At the meeting, we discussed enrollment trends, faculty compensation, and faculty size levels through time at NMSU.
