Activity Report for Week of April 22 – April 28

  • I spent Wednesday in Salt Lake City, attending an Executive Committee meeting of the Western Academic Leadership Forum. At the meeting, we discussed the challenges facing higher education and the importance of taking better control of the messaging surrounding higher education.  It is especially important to help the general public understand the value of higher education, the affordability of public higher education, and the importance of the research enterprise on university campuses.
  • On Friday, I spent the morning at the NMSU Foundation Board meeting. During the course of this meeting Justin Bannister gave a presentation on the university’s marketing efforts and the positive results associated with this initiative. We then heard from Dr. Frank Ramos, the holder of the Johnson Geochemistry Chair, on the transformative impact endowed professorships have on the teaching and research mission of NMSU (thank you, Mike and Judy Johnson, for your leadership in establishing the first endowed chair in the College of Arts and Sciences).  The final presentation of the morning was from Elena Davidson, who realized shortly into her first year of college that she had made a mistake by not attending NMSU. Through the extraordinary efforts of Honors College Dean Miriam Chaiken, Elena was able to re-establish her scholarships and attend NMSU as a Conroy Scholar.  Elena also provided a delightful description of her interview for a Google internship, which was eventually awarded to her and will take her to Sunnyvale, California this summer.
