Activity Report for Week of April 21 – April 27

I spent most of the week at my last meeting of the Western Academic Leadership Forum. The keynote speaker for the conference was Claude Steele, a prominent social psychologist and administrator who has done seminal work on stereotype threat. Dr. Steele did a marvelous job of summarizing many years of research on stereotype threat and its implications for constructing campus environments that are conducive to the success of all students. Another highpoint of the meeting was a talk by Physics Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman, who discussed science education and alternatives to lectures that lead to more learning in the classroom.
