Executive Vice President and Provost Wendy Wilkins…[will] work with our faculty and deans to merge the seven strategies for success with our Living the Vision plan in a renewed effort we will call “Building the Vision,” a phrase that both encompasses our past goals and recognizes that in today’s competitive environment we need to be ever responsive to external demands for relevant programs and cutting-edge research.

-President Barbara Couture, Spring 2011 Convocation Speech

NMSU’s strategic plan is built on President Couture’s Goals for Success, which focus on diversity, graduation, international programs, economic development, effectiveness and efficiency, alumni and friends, and NMSU’s culture of pride. The work of the Building the Vision Committee centers on developing, for each goal, objectives, strategies, and key performance indicators for the next three years.

The Building the Vision Committee is a comprehensive group of university stake-holders representing vital areas charged with developing the objectives and strategies to best meet the goals. The committee expects to draft the academic strategic plan by the end of the fall 2011 term.

    Strategic planning in general

Strategic planning is a process in which an organization defines:

    • Where it is going over the next year or more,
    • How it’s going to get there, and
    • How it’ll know if it arrived.

In addition to developing a step-wise plan for how NMSU can realize goals, the strategic planning process can help ensure that key leaders agree on NMSU’s future directions.  For this reason, the planning process can be as important than the strategic plan itself.

Although there are many types of strategic plans, NMSU’s will be goals-based. This means that every goal will be associated with objectives, strategies and key performance indicators with specific achievement targets set for a specific time.
