Activity Report for week of August 14 – August 20

Aggie Move-In Day

My week began with move-in day on Sunday, and the beginning was not auspicious.  I arrived at the Pan Am parking lot shortly after 8 AM to discover long lines of students and parents waiting to check in.  A major reason for the long lines was the failure of a local vendor to deliver and set up tables, chairs, and tents for the check-in.  Although this could have been a disaster, it was relatively quickly remedied as personnel from Administration and Finance, Auxiliary Services, Residential Life, and Facilities and Services combined to find and deliver tables, chairs, and canopies.  Moreover, students and staff from a variety of offices sat down to help with check-in, delivered water to people standing in line, and made sure that every student and his/her family received a warm Aggie welcome.  It was NMSU at its finest, and I could not have been more proud to be part of the Aggie family.  Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this effort, especially Matt Crouse and Greg Block who demonstrated real leadership under very trying conditions.

Fall Convocation

Fall convocation on Tuesday provided an opportunity to reflect on the good work done at NMSU every day to advance knowledge and educate the people of New Mexico.  One thing that stood out about this year’s faculty award winners is their commitment to both scholarship and teaching; they clearly demonstrate that these two activities can be synergistic.  Congratulations especially to Dr. Hongmei Luo from the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, who won both a University Research Council Career Award and the Westhafer Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activity.  Dr. Luo not only has a distinguished research record, she is a dedicated mentor who has successfully trained a large number of undergraduate and graduate students.  As noted during the convocation ceremony, “she has magnified her own strengths by developing the strengths of others.”
