We Are NMSU – June 24, 2024

Dear colleagues,

I want to congratulate our student-athletes for their outstanding academic achievements this Spring 2024 semester. Our student-athletes have once again set a high standard, with all 16 of our men’s and women’s sports teams maintaining a combined cumulative average GPA over 3.0. This accomplishment continues our 19-year tradition of academic success, reflecting the unwavering support from our faculty, coaches, the entire university community, and the Las Cruces community.

Our student-athletes are ambassadors of NMSU, demonstrating that excellence in athletics and academics can go hand in hand. Their success brings pride and unity to our campus, enhancing our reputation both locally and nationally. To our student-athletes, thank you for representing the true academic spirit of our university.

I am also happy to share that the New Mexico Board of Finance has approved two graduate programs scheduled to start in Fall 2025. A new interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Food Science program will support and expand the value-added agriculture industry into the food processing sector. Dr. Efren Delgado, department head and professor of Family and Consumer Science, has spearheaded the development of this doctoral program. Additionally, a new online M.S. in Geographic Information Science and Technology will provide opportunities for working professionals and recent graduates to enter the growing field of geospatial science, reaching both rural and urban populations. Dr. Michaela Buenemann, professor and department head of Geography and Environmental Studies, provided invaluable leadership toward the start of this master’s program.

As I reflect on last week’s events, I am saddened by the losses and disruptions caused by fires in and around Ruidoso and Mescalero. I stand with President Torres in asking you to consider donating to support our neighbors. In the larger scheme of things, we are all connected in the great circle of life. We are not just NMSU, we are New Mexico.
