We Are NMSU – October 9, 2025

Dear colleagues,

Effective communication across our university is essential to working together as one cohesive, mission-driven community. Over the past year, I have reflected on how communication influences every aspect of our operations, from academic programs to administrative processes. We have made some progress, but there are still opportunities to enhance how we share information, coordinate across units, and ensure that decisions and updates reach everyone who needs to be informed.

I continue to hear the questions that were first shared in the July 1, 2024, We are NMSU issue that revealed where we can strengthen our internal systems and processes:

  • Why is it taking so long?
  • Whom should I contact for assistance?
  • What do I need to do to get this through the system?
  • Am I allowed to do this?
  • Why do I need to provide this information?

As detailed in a later issue of We are NMSU from August 12, 2024, these questions remind us that clear, timely communication is key to helping one another succeed. From these reflections, several guiding principles emerge:

  • Communication modality: A quick phone call or a brief meeting can often achieve more than multiple emails.
  • Follow-up: It is important to provide updates or feedback, especially when the process takes longer than anticipated.
  • Follow-through: Confirming that a task is fully completed builds trust and ensures accountability.
  • Responsiveness: We can all support one another by responding promptly.

Across departments, colleges, and campuses, there are numerous examples of effective communication and coordination. We need to strengthen our efforts further along these principles, especially when working together in committees. We need to ensure the correct individuals and units are included in discussions and communications from the start. Sharing information openly and early, especially policy development issues and committee resolutions, invites valuable input and helps prevent misunderstandings later in the process.

Effective communication is not just about exchanging information; it is necessary to build mutual trust and strengthen our shared purpose. Let us continue to work together to create an environment where communication is open, transparent, and grounded in mutual respect. Together, we can model the collaborative spirit that makes NMSU thrive. We are NMSU.
